It is situated about 12 miles northwest of Darlington, 12 miles southwest of Durham and 5 miles southeast of Crook at the meeting of the River Wear together with its subordinate the River Gaunless. Bishop Auckland has a town-twinning alongside the French village of Ivry-sur-Seine. The neighborhood is also informally knowned as as Bish Vegas, the beginnings of which are uncertain.
